1. Butchslap
Term used to describe the on-air emasculation of local Fox sportscaster Butch Sterns. Stearns story in September 04 portrayed the relationship between Sox pitching aces Curt Shilling and Pedro Martinez negatively. Curt famously dressed down Stearns when he called into the show.
Sample Curt quotes: Don't be stupid enough to think you can make something out of nothing. That's how dumb idiotic rumors get started by those who don't know the game. Because you don't see us playing grab-ass on the field doesn't mean a thing. It's a stupid idiotic comment to make.

2. The Monster
Nickname for Daisuke Matsuzaka, the japanese pitcher that the Red Sox bid $51.11 million in November ‘06 just to chat. This winning bid now gives the Red Sox an opportunity to pay him millions more a year in salary.
A $51.11 million bid and now Scott Boras to negotiate with? That deserves a MONSTER sized Japanese style bow, well played.

3. Jack Daniels
Magical elixir that propelled the 2004 squad to great achievement, administered in small quantities or shots in ritualistic ceremonies prior to big games. Kevin Millar boasted that the team did shots before facing the Yankees in 04 and a brouhaha erupted shortly thereafter.
Millar to teammates: "Yee hah, everybody get your shot we've got a game 7 to win so cowboy up you m*therf*ckers"

4. Billy Beane
General Manager of the Red Sox for about a day in 2002 before having an anxiety attack and backing out of the deal. Returned to his role as General Manager for the Oakland A’s.
Billy Beane was never much of a player but the guy gets the A's into the playoffs more often than not as a GM.

5. Ballgate
Controversy stirred up by columnist Dan Shaugnessy (CHB) regarding the ball thrown by Keith Foulk to Doug Mientkiewicz completing the 2004 World Series victory and ending the 86 year drought. Ownership of the ball was disputed by the Red Sox president Larry Lucchino and Meintkiewicz.
CHB really blindsided Doug eh? That lil prank by Shank sent Doug packin and left us with Millar at first. Stay classy, Shank.

6. Citgo Sign

7. Dirty Water
Song played over the Fenway Park PA system as the hometown teams celebratory postgame anthem. Song was written and recorded by Standells.
One to grow on: Duke Duquette and Jimy Williams picked this victory song in 1997 and a tradition was born.

8. Duke
Nickname for the combative and paranoid Sox GM Dan Duquette. Fired by John Henry and replaced by Theo Epstein. Notable signings and trades for players include: Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez, Johnny Damon, Derek Lowe, Jason Varitek and Jose Offerman.
Referred to Roger Clemens as being "in the twilight of his career." Clemens went on to win 4 Cy Young awards. Nice one, Dan.

10. Bob Rogers
Former NESN personality and host of the pre-game and post-game shows. Left under strange circumstances, rather than fulfill a NESN commitment he went to coach a high school basketball game and was never seen again.
Back in the day could you tell the difference between Don Orsillo and Bob Rogers? Be honest.

11. NESN
Acronym for New England Sports Network which the Red Sox are majority owners, Bruins are on it too. Other programming consists of Sportsdesk with Hazel Mae, Charlie Moore Fishing and infomercials.
If the game is not on and Charlie Moore is - it's a rain delay.

12. Six, two and even
Oft-repeated “old guy” phrase stated by former Red Sox manager Joe Morgan (aka: Walpole Joe, Turnpike Joe). No meaning of this phrase has ever been determined. Sources reveal obscure Dick Tracy reference.
Guy to his friend: this six, two and even is it sorta like six to one, half dozen the other or is it more que sera sera? Friend: Dunno. (shrug)

13. Jimy Williams
Inscrutable manager of the Red Sox from 1997-2001. Williams will likely be remembered most for his strange utterances and regional sayings exemplified during the press conference announcing his hiring.
Q: Who said "if a frog had wings, he wouldn't bump his booty" when meeting the Boston Press for the 1st time? A: Jimy Williams

14. Walpole Joe
Name given to laconic local favorite Joe Morgan manager of the Red Sox from 1988-91. Immediately after taking the helm from fired (disgraced?) John McNamara – the team went on a 12 game winning streak known as Morgan Magic. (aka: Turnpike Joe for his off-season work ploughing snow on the Mass Pike)
Press: Joe, any opinion on the game tonight? Joe: Six, two and even. Any more questions?
