2. Tito-ese
How Tito (Terry Francona, manager of the Red Sox, 2004- ) talks, at least at press conferences.
Coined by Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe.
From the Boston Globe, 3-Oct-2007, p. D7: Francona, responding to a question about the challenges posed by the Angels running game, responded in what might one day be called Tito-ese. From the official transcript of the manager's press conference: "Sometimes a stolen base we don't feel will break our backs, whereas opposed to a three-run homer will. There are times when you absolutely probably need to not only not have a stolen base, but you don't want the attempt, sometimes from second to third, you'll actually hold a runner there."

4. Big Papi
Big Papi on the name Big Papi /> “I’m not really sure how it started, bro. I have no idea. After I started playing for the Red Sox, I would walk around the clubhouse and talk to guys, and I started calling them papi. In the Dominican Republic, we use the word all the time, like Americans would use buddy or pal. In Boston, before we knew it, everybody on the team was calling everyone else papi, and it wasn’t too long before the name somehow belonged to me. David Ortiz. Big Papi. Wherever I go now, bro, that’s what people call me.”—David Ortiz in Boston Magazine, April 2007, p. 95.

5. Mayor's Cup
The Mayor’s Cup goes to the winner of the Spring training series, typically 5 or 6 games, between the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins. Both teams train in Fort Myers, Florida. It would seem to be an honor more highly regarded by Twins fans than Bosox fans, since a quick survey suggests that few Bosox fans even know about it.

6. Kathryn Gemme
In 2007, Kathryn Gemme was the oldest fan of the Red Sox.
Kathryn Gemme was born in Chicopee on Nov. 9, 1894. She rooted for Babe Ruth when he played for the Sox. She attended her first game shortly after Fenway opened in 1912. On her birthday on Nov. 9, 2005, team representatives brought to her the 2004 World Series trophy. According to the Boston Globe of 3-Jan-2007, ”’She had her picture taken with the trophy,’ said her daughter, Lucille Findley of Jacksonville, Ill. ‘That was a treasure. That was a big day of her life.’ ‘It was remarkable for us to visit someone who was actually a true testament to what a lifelong Red Sox fan really means, someone who stuck with us the entirety of those 86 years,’ said Marty Ray of the team’s public relations department, who was with Mrs. Gemme that day. ‘She was an eternal Red Sox fan in the truest sense of the word,’ Ray said.”
When in 2004 Johnny Pesky told her how old she was, she said: “Ah, Johnny, you’re just a kid.”
She died Friday, 29-Dec-2006, aged 112 years.

7. $51.1 million
Amount the Red Sox paid to just negotiate for ace Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka of the Seibu Lions.
For the $51.1m negotiating fee the Red Sox paid to talk to Matsuzaka, they could have paid the combined 2006 payroll for both the Tampa Bay Devil Rays AND the Florida Marlins.

13. The Red Seat
Back in 1946, one of the great (if not the greatest) Red Sox players to ever put on the uniform accomplished a feet of mythic proportions. Ted Williams (that’s his number 9 up on the balcony facade) launched a pitch 502 feet for the longest home run ever hit into the right field bleachers. The seat was painted red and sits among a sea of green to commemorate the feat and give fans a very visible reminder of the greatness that has been on display at Fenway all these years.
