Ladder, The
Before the advent of the Monster Seats, when there was a screen on top of the Wall to catch balls. After each batting practice, a member of the ground crew would scamper up a ladder attached to the Wall to retrieve baseballs hit into the screen.
John Updike likened this to “mushroom gatherers” in his famous essay, “Hub Fans Bid Kid, Adieu.”
